A Featured Public Art & Architectural Collaboration by Ramesh & Associate (R&A)
Introduction
Situated along the historic waterfront of Al Shindagha, Resonance of the Wind is a site-specific public artwork that harmonizes natural forces—wind, water, and light—with contemporary architectural expression. Created by artists Maryam Namvar and Neda Salmanpour, the installation captures the visual and acoustic essence of Dubai Creek while inviting visitors to reflect on the layered heritage of one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods.
Commissioned under Dubai Culture’s Art in Public Spaces Strategy and supported by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, Dubai Art Partnerships, and the Alserkal Arts Foundation, the project embodies Dubai’s broader vision of integrating art, architecture, and public design to enrich the urban realm.
As the appointed architecture and design consultant, Ramesh & Associate (R&A) ensured that the artwork responded intelligently to its environment—respecting heritage guidelines, addressing structural needs, and elevating the artistic narrative through architectural innovation.
A Living Response to Wind, Water & Architecture
At the core of the installation is its dynamic engagement with the natural environment. Designed to move, resonate, and refract light, the artwork exemplifies how environmental architecture and site-responsive design can shape sensory experience.
Wind as Composer
The breeze activates soft acoustic vibrations within the structure, echoing the maritime atmosphere historically associated with Al Shindagha.
R&A’s architectural detailing ensured the materials could safely support these sound-generating interactions.
Water as Memory
Reflective components capture the shifting colors of Dubai Creek, mirroring the waterways that connected early trading communities. These elements were selected and engineered for climatic resilience and long-term performance.
Architecture as Language
Drawing from the district’s wind towers, coral stone textures, and Emirati geometric motifs, the artwork reinterprets traditional forms through a refined contemporary design vocabulary.
R&A ensured these architectural references remained structurally sound, contextually aligned, and compliant with heritage-site regulations.
Together, these elements create a sensory bridge between tradition and modernity—showcasing how architectural expertise can elevate public art while honoring cultural identity.
Resonance: Echoes of Place
A complementary narrative, Resonance, expands the conceptual foundation of the work. It distills the visual, spatial, and sonic qualities of Al Shindagha into material, form, and environmental response.
Both titles—Resonance and Resonance of the Wind—capture the shared artistic and architectural intent: transforming elemental forces into meaningful experiences rooted in memory, movement, and place.
Cultural Significance & Heritage Context
Al Shindagha is a living archive of Dubai’s architectural and social evolution. By merging reflective surfaces, environmental acoustics, and contemporary spatial design, the installation:
Reconnects visitors to the district’s historic sensory identity
Highlights stories of trade, migration, and waterfront community life
Honors the architectural vocabulary of early Dubai
Advances Dubai’s goals for cultural continuity and heritage-sensitive urban design
The result is a compelling example of how cultural architecture and public art can revive emotional and sensory memory in historic urban environments.
